The next morning the sun was out and bright. They’d pulled the truck behind Baylor’s plow, and very slowly the two vehicles managed to make it to the bottom of the snaky hill without incident. They all got out on the pavement, still icy, but it appeared to have been scraped since the storm.

Stryker approached Baylor first, put out his hand. “Thanks, man. I don’t know what would’ve happened to us if you hadn’t been here.”

“Probably off in some snow bank somewhere.” They patted each others’ backs the way men do when they want to hug but can’t. That’s when McKay felt sorry for men. Baylor lifted Rosie off her feet, and swung her around. “Now you listen to me, little Missy, if you ever get in a pinch, you know where I am.”

“I do. Thanks Baylor.” She slid into the truck behind Stryker.

When he turned to say goodbye to McKay his green eyes caught hers, and held long. He reached for her hands, and pulled him to her. “Somethin’ K…I want to say somethin’…”

She could feel her heart slamming against her chest. She wanted him to say something. She wanted him to say anything that let her know this was not the last time she’d see him, but the first of many more. She wanted him to want her the way she wanted him. She wanted him to lean down and kiss her full on the mouth and wave Stryker and Rosie farewell and drag her back up that mountainside and make love to her all afternoon. But, none of that happened. Instead, Baylor reached down and pecked her cheek, his soft mustache tickling her face. He whispered, “Come back when it’s not so cold,” and then he hugged her tightly, “And when I’m not so old, and you’re not so young.”

Reluctantly, she pulled away and slid into the front seat of the truck.
